The Radiomir was the first watch designed by Officine Panerai. A prototype was produced in 1936 at the request of the Italian Royal Navy, which wanted a "special luminescent watch for divers". Around ten prototypes passed the tests perfectly and offered a level of performance far superior to that of the waterproof watches of the time. In 1938, as events were moving quickly in Europe on the eve of the War, the Italian army placed a larger order with Panerai. If Officine Panerai watches are as reliable as the divers of the Italian Navy confirmed, it is mainly thanks to the special structure of the Radiomir case. With its generous dimensions (47 mm in diameter) and cushion shape, with edges designed to protect the dial, its resistance is doubled by a water-resistance reinforced by a three-part construction with screw-down back and winding crown. The Radiomir also has wire lugs welded to the case and its wide, waterproof strap is long enough to be worn over the diving suits of frogmen commandos. Its name refers to the material visible on the dial: this highly luminescent substance, patented by Panerai, makes the Radiomir the ideal watch for underwater use, its raison d'être.
