From the first daring takeoffs to the advent of commercial flights, Breitling’s history is closely linked to that of aviation. In the 1930s, Breitling’s Huit Aviation department made a name for itself by inventing precision clocks for use in cockpits. Two decades later, the brand introduced another flight instrument, this time a new one worn on the wrist: the Ref. 765 AVI. This pioneering pilot’s watch inspired the technical features of today’s Super AVI, a collection inspired by the adventurous spirit of the first famous aircraft. The Super AVI P-51 Mustang pays tribute to one such legend. When the aircraft was built in just 120 days, even its designer North American Aviation did not anticipate its power. The P-51’s low-drag wings and engine cooling system were still experimental when the single-seat fighter first took off in 1940. They allowed it to push the limits of speed and range. The addition of a Merlin engine improved the aircraft’s high-altitude performance, establishing it as the best all-around fighter of its day. This Super AVI P-51 Mustang is a true pilot’s watch, built to withstand the demands of a vintage cockpit. Its large Arabic numerals provide excellent readability on the dial and bezel. Its sturdy case measures 46 mm and the oversized crown is positioned at 3 o’clock. The knurled bezels provide an optimal grip and the topstitched calfskin straps are reminiscent of the stitching found on classic flight gear.
